One of Madeira’s most popular visitor destinations, Calheta is located on the southwest coast and has a lovely marina and two golden sand beaches. It is popular for outdoor activities and has several attractions amongst its UNESCO listed national parks and sugar cane mills.
Located on Madeira’s south west coast, Calheta is a pretty town with golden beaches, beautiful scenery and a rich cultural heritage. It is one of the island's oldest principalities, having been founded 1430 so there is plenty of historical charm, alongside modern luxuries.
Madeira typically has a rocky coastline, however Claheta has an artificially created golden sand beach which is perfect for swimming and sunbathing, while the nearby marina is where you can jump on a boat to head out for dolphin and whale watching, deep sea fishing and sailing adventures.
Calheta is also home to the Engenho da Calheta, one of the island's few remaining sugar cane mills, where visitors can learn about the region's sugar production history and try some traditional Madeiran rum. There are also plenty of outdoors activities with some lovely hiking trails, known as the levada trails, and visiting nearby waterfalls.
