Northern Italy is home to stunning lakes, charming towns, and the magical city of Venice. It is little wonder that it is such a popular destination for visitors wanting to stay in a luxury villa. We have a wonderful selection of private villas on the lakes as well as in Venice, suitable for a romantic getaway or a family retreat.
Northern Italy consists of eight administrative Regions in northern Italy: Aosta Valley, Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol. The region attracts visitors from all over the world from those who want to visit the canals of Venice, the capital of Veneto, to the spectacular northern lakes, including Lake Como. Venice and the lakes are where you will find most of our beautiful hand picked villas, perfect for either couples or family groups.
Lake Como, the third largest of the Italian Lakes, is located in Italy’s Lombardy region and is an upscale resort area known for its dramatic scenery and is set against the foothills of the Alps. The lake is shaped like an upside-down Y, with three slender branches that meet at the resort town of Bellagio. At the bottom of the southwest branch lies the city of Como, home to Renaissance architecture.
There are lots of charming towns dotted around Lake Como that are worth a visit, including Menagio, Bellagio and Varenna. James Bond fans should also check out Villa del Balbianello which was featured in Casino Royal. Lake Maggiore is also home to some beautiful villas and is a quieter option than Lake Como. Visitors can explore the tiny island of Isola Bella, home to the stunning Borromeo Palace and Baroque gardens.
Venice is at the top of many bucket lists with its gondolas, water buses and hidden streets, it is the perfect place to explore with loved ones. There are several small islands to visit, including Burano, Murano and Torchello, each with unique sights and activities. St Mark’s Square boasts a beautiful Basilica with Byzantine mosaics and towers with stunning views of the city.
Of course no visit to an Italian destination is complete without sampling the delicious local cuisine. Venice is known for its squid ink pasta (Spaghetti al Nero di Seppia), Sarde in Saor (sweet & sour sardines), and fresh seafood risotto. You can also visit a local bacaro (wine bar) for cicchetti (Venetian tapas) and a glass of refreshing prosecco.
There are several charming towns on the shores of Lake Como, some of our favourites include Bellagio with its elegant villas, Varenna, a romantic village with cobblestone streets and botanical gardens, and Menaggio which is great for scenic walks and relaxed lakefront dining.
No visit to Venice is complete without taking a gondola ride. Cruise along the Grand Canal and see Rialto Bridge, Ca’ d’Oro, and Palazzo Ducale.
Here you can admire the Byzantine mosaics of St. Mark’s Basilica, climb St. Mark’s Campanile for the best city views, and visit the Doge’s Palace and walk across the Bridge of Sighs.
Summer is generally hot and sunny with temperatures of 25-35°C. It is a great time to be staying around the lakes however most areas will be very busy, particularly during school holidays.
