St. Andrews is a seaside town northeast of Edinburgh, on Scotland’s east coast. It’s known for its many golf courses, including the Old Course, with the landmark Swilcan Bridge at the 18th hole. The British Golf Museum chronicles the history of U.K. golf. On a headland nearby are the ruins of St. Andrews Castle, with its medieval bottle dungeon.
Perthshire is a glorious location filled to the brim with things to do, featuring acres of forests, incredible attractions, and city gems to explore. The city of Perth was once Scotland’s ancient capital and is now the country’s newest city with historic buildings, castles, and museums to enjoy. Loch Tay is a freshwater loch in the central highlands of Scotland, in the Perth and Kinross and Stirling council areas. Loch Lomond is a lake in southern Scotland. It’s part of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. The surrounding highlands area is home to red deer and oak woodlands. On the eastern shore, footpaths and cycle trails criss-cross craggy Ben Lomond mountain and the smaller Conic Hill.
Visitors can walk through ancient woodlands, see the spectacular Black Linn Falls, and visit Ossian’s Hall, a hidden viewing platform. Nearby Dunkeld is also worth visiting, a charming town with a historic cathedral and great cafés.
The Old Course is the world’s most famous golf course, attracting golfers from around the globe. Even if you don’t play, you can visit the Swilcan Bridge and the Old Course Clubhouse for a drink and views of the course.
Perthshire has several distilleries to visit including Edradour Distillery, Scotland’s smallest traditional whisky distillery, and Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery which offers fantastic tours and tastings. From St Andrews you can also visit Kingsbarns Distillery, a coastal distillery offering whisky tastings & gin tours.
Summer in Scotland is a wonderful time to visit with pleasant temperatures averaging 15-22°C and a vibrant atmosphere in the main cities. Both the Edinburgh Festival and the Highland Games take place during this time and crowds will be at their peak.
Spring and Autumn are also a great time to visit. The weather will be variable and temperatures around 8-16°C. Spring boasts beautiful wildflowers all over the countryside, and in Autumn the whisky making will be in full swing after the harvest.
Winter is a quieter time to visit Scotland, with temperatures around 0-8°C. There is a cozy atmosphere around Christmas and the cities really come alive for Hogmanay (New Years Eve). Skiing is also a possibility in the highlands.
